This type of Mitre box has a fine toothed blade designed for cutting metal and is great for Cutting Sticks of balsa in a perfect 45 or 90 degree angle. Recommended for cutting medium to heavy grade balsa with a density of 12 pounds per cubic foot or higher ([12lb/ft3] balsa sticks weighing greater than 1.8 grams at the dimensions of 1/8 square x 36 inches.) Sticks that are more dense than 12lb/ft3 are very ridged and hard to cut effectively with a razor blade. To cut through balsa lighter than 12lb/ft3 requires less pressure applied to the blade and more cuts against the grain to form a uniform cut. For lighter balsa, a standard razor blade always works best.
Rotary Cutting Mat Quantity: $ 4.95
Rotary cutting mats will stand up to continuous cutting to its surface by razor blades without wearing out. The surface of the rotary mat is self healing when used under normal circumstances. The mat is 1/16 inch thick and will protect any surface from cuts. With the layered surface, the Rotary Mat will stand up to 25 pounds of constant prolonged pressure before taking serious damage (normal cut will require less than 2 pounds of pressure). I use one of these mats regularly for my own balsa projects.
Dial Caliper Quantity: $ 26.00
The Dial Caliper roles and measures just like its high priced competitors, only at a reduced price. I have tried many types and brands of calipers and this one easily compares with all of the other brands. For balsa structure competitions, it is important to make sure that the materials you are using are within the specifications of the problem. Light weight model plane builders like to use a caliper to measure balsa sheets while they are hand sanding them to the right thickness for their plane.
Pack of 50 Razor Blades Quantity: $ 3.95 Razor blades are very handy for balsa projects. The disadvantage to razor blades is how many are needed when cutting through contest grade (extra light) balsa. If the edge of the blade is not sharp, the balsa may tare instead of cutting in a perfect cut. Given the low price of these blades, you do not have to feel bad about discarding a blade regularly through out the completion of your project.

I have purchased $500 scales in the past with the same features and this weighs the same. Even if you stack a pocket scale as I have done on top of a 500 gram expensive scale and tare the 500 gram scale, when you put a weight on the pocket scale it the reading is almost exactly the same as the 500 gram scale.

You would think a scissor would crunch the balsa and normally it would, but this design cuts right through at 7 different angles. Angles include 45, 60, 75, 90, 105, 120, and 135 degrees. The cutter has a fence and 2 inches of width cutting capacity for sheets. The blade is very sharp.
