Tools

Mitre Box
Qty: x $19.99

This type of Mitre box has a fine toothed blade designed for cutting metal and is great for cutting sticks of balsa in a perfect 45 or 90 degree angles.

Hobby Knife Set
Qty: x $9.99

There are 13 different styles of cutting and carving knives and three different styles of handle grips. Each knife has a different angle of the blade allowing for many types of cuts for multiple applications.

Rotary Cutting Mat
Qty: x $5.95

The rotary cutting mats will stand up to continuous cutting on its surface by razor blades without wearing out. The surface of the rotary mat is self-healing when used under normal circumstances. The mat is 1/16 inch thick and will protect any surface from cuts. With the layered surface, the Rotary Mat will stand up to 25 pounds of constant prolonged pressure before taking serious damage (normal cut will require less than 2 pounds of pressure). I use one of these mats regularly for my own balsa projects.

Digital Caliper
Qty: x $29.87

This Digital Caliper measures just like its high priced competitors, only at a reduced price. I have tried many types and brands of calipers and this one easily compares with all of the other brands. For balsa structure competitions, it is important to make sure that the materials you are using are within the specifications of the problem. Lightweight model plane builders like to use a caliper to measure balsa sheets while they are hand sanding them to the right thickness for their plane.

Pack of 50 Razor Blades
Qty: x $6.95

Razor blades are very handy for balsa projects. The disadvantage to razor blades is how many are needed when cutting through contest grade (extra light) balsa. If the edge of the blade is not sharp, the balsa may tare instead of cutting in a perfect cut. Given the low price of these blades, you do not have to feel bad about discarding a blade regularly through out the completion of your project.

Easy Cutter Ultimate
Qty: x $26.00

This cutter cuts near perfect angles. You would think a scissor would crunch the balsa and normally it would, but this design cuts right through at 7 different angles. Angles include 45, 60, 75, 90, 105, 120, and 135 degrees. This product is best used for angle cuts. For 90-degree cuts the best cut can be attained with a Mini Cut-off saw or a mitre box saw. The cutter has a movable fence and 2 inches of width cutting capacity for sheets. The blade is very sharp.

Mini Cut-off Saw
Qty: x $49.99

A very accurate way to cut angles and straight cuts. The saw can cut through 1/2-inch sticks of balsa. For this particular saw you can use it as is or take the angle feature off of the saw and build a table and fence for it. I use both styles myself. With a table and fence you can set up a stop block and cut nearly identical lengths (structure builders use this for cutting legs of their structures.) I rarely sand towers when using this product. The kerf for this cutter is 1/64 of an inch so you don't waste much wood.

Qty: x $29.95

Maximum load is 100 grams or 3.528oz.
Readability 0.01g / 0.001oz.
Scale Dimensions 4.2" x 2.6" x 0.8".
Platform Dimensions 2.2" x 2.9"
